      • Economic Analysis of Energy-efficient Buildings in China

        Applying energy-saving measures in residential buildings is usually constrained by the increase of initial investment.However, if it is analyzed from the view of energy cost and life-cycle cost, the energy-saving benefit can offset the increase of initial investment. An analysis method based on life-cycle concept was developed to calculate the energy cost of residential building flats. Several uncertain factors were included into the model, making it more accurate to reflect practical situation. The model was solved using the software DeST and applied to one residential building project in Shanghai. The case study shows that the initial investment (cost) is paid back during the operational phase through less consumption of energy. It further indicates that the investment recovery period is between 10 and 19 years which are acceptable to households and developers in China....

      • Modeling and Analysis of Complex Equipment Maintenance Dynamics

        An equipment maintenance system is naturally a complex dynamical system. The effective maintenance management must be based on the knowledge of the system's intrinsic dynamics. And the structure of the maintenance system determines its behavior. This paper analyzes the basic structures and elements of a maintenance system for complex multi-components equipment. The maintenance system is considered as a dynamic system whose behavior is influenced by its structure's feedback and interaction, and the system's available resources. Building the dynamical model with Simulink, we show some results about the maintenance system's nonlinear dynamics, which are never given by stochastic process methods. The model can be used for understanding and determining maintenance system behavior, towards which operational adjustments of maintenance infrastructure, precise prediction of maintenance requirements and timely supply of maintenance resources can be made in a more informed way....

        In order to understand the vibration characteristic of system structure of electronic equipment cabinet within the particular vibration frequency, the finite element analysis software- ANSYS is used to simulate the tests of random vibrations of the cabinet system and obtain the isopleths graph of deformation and stress of the cabinet. It can confirm maximum of deformation and stress of the cabinet and position happened. Through more analysis of the frequency response curve, which can confirm harmful consequences random vibrations caused and weak link of the cabinet structure.       • Simulation analysis of construction process of high rock slope's stabilization

        A self-developed elasto-plastic finite element program was used to analyze the construction sequence of high rock slope' s stabilization in a coal-coking plant, and the result was compared with that employing the ultimate equilibrium method. Based on the results of finite element analysis, the stress contour graphs and dis-placement vector graphs at different construction steps were obtained, and the behavior of the slope during stabi-lization construction process was analyzed quantitatively. Based on the analysis of safety factors of three different schemes of stabilization and two different construction schemes, the assessment of stability and bracing design of the construction process were performed. The results show that the original reinforcement design is improper;the stability of the rock slope is controlled by a developed structural plane, the stability factor after excavation is less than 1, and the free surface should be braced in time ; for stability, the construction sequence should adopt that bracing follows excavation step by step up to down; the local slide occurred during the construction process agrees with the dangerous slide determined by the numerical analysis, which proves the validity and rationality of the adopted method....

      • Simulation for microstructure evolution of Al-Si alloys in solidification process

        The numerical simulation for microstructure evolution of Al-Si alloy in solidification process is carried out with phase field model. The phase field model,solution algorithm and the program of dendrite growth are introduced. The definition of initial condition,boundary condition and the stability condition of differential format are all included. The simulation results show that the evolution of dendrite morphology is as follows: the initial circle nucleus transforms to the rectangle one firstly,then its corners develop to the four trunks and from which the secondary side branches are generated and even the third side branches are produced from secondary ones. The dendrite tip radius decreases quickly at the initial stage and changes slowly at the late stage,which is mainly due to the fact that more and more side branches appear and grow up. The comparisons of dendrite morphology between simulated results and investigations by others are also presented. It is proved that the dendrite morphologies are similar in trunks and arms growth,so the developed phase field program is accurate....

      • Effect of solidification on solder bump formation in solder jet process: Simulation and experiment

        To investigate the influence of the solidification on the solder bump formation in the solder jet process, the volume of fluid (VOF) models of the solder droplets impinging onto the fluxed and non-fluxed substrates were presented. The high speed camera was used to record the solder impingement and examine the validity of the model. The results show that the complete rebound occurs during the process of the solder droplet impinging onto the fluxed substrate, whereas a cone-shaped solder bump forms during the process of the solder droplet impinging onto the non-fluxed substrate.       • Verification of topological relationship in 2-D grain growth process by simulation

        Behaviors of the quasi-steady state grain size distribution and the corresponding topological relationship were investigated using the Ports Monte Carlo method to simulate the normal grain growth process. The observed quasi-steady state grain size distribution can be well fit by the Weibull function rather than the Hillert distribution. It is also found that the grain size and average number of grain sides are not linearly related. The reason that the quasi-steady state grain size distribution deviates from the Hillert distribution may contribute to the nonlinearity of the relation of the average number of grain sides with the grain size. The results also exhibit the reasonability of the relationship deduced by Mullins between the grain size distribution and the average number of grain sides....

      • Particle simulation of the failure process of brittle rock under triaxial compression

        In order to investigate the failure process of brittle rock under triaxial compression through both experimental and numerical ap-proaches, the particle simulation method was used in numerical simulations and the simulated results were compared with those of the ex-periment. The numerical simulation results, such as fracture propagation, microcrack distribution, stress-strain response, and damage patterns, were discussed in detail. The simulated results under various confining pressures (0-60 MPa) are in good agreement with the experimental results. The simulated results reveal that rock failure is caused by axial splitting under uniaxial compression. As the confining pressure in-creases, rock failure occurs in a few localized shear planes and the rock mechanical behavior is changed from brittle to ductile. Consequently, the peak failure strength, microcrack numbers, and the shear plane angle increase, but the ratio of tensile to shear microcracks decreases. The damage formation during the compression simulations indicates that the particle simulation method can produce similar behaviors as those observed through laboratory compression tests....

      • Deposition behavior of multi-particle impact in cold spraying process

        In the practical cold-spraying process,a number of particles impact onto a substrate and then form a coating.To study the deformation behavior and multi-particle interactions,single-particle,two-particle,and three-particle impacts were simulated using the ANSYS/LS-DYNA version 970.A copper coating was prepared and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to analyze the microstructures of the powders and the coating.Numerical results reveal that the critical deposition velocity is 600 m/s for a copper particle/copper substrate.The particles deform more fully due to multi-particle interactions,such as tamping,interlocking,and extrusion effects.The compression ratio increases from 40% to 70% as a result of the tamping effect.This is beneficial for achieving the cold-sprayed coating.The multi-particle morphology and compression ratio in the experiment are consistent with those of simulation results.Based on these results,the coating of high performance can be prepared through selecting appropriate parameters and suitable pre-treatment processes....

      • Effects of tool flank wear on orthogonal cutting process of aluminum alloy

        The tool flank begins to wear out as soon as cutting process proceeds. Cutting parameters such as cutting forces and cutting temperature will vary with increasing degree of flank wear. In order to reveal the relationship between them, the theoretical situations of cutting process were analyzed considering the tool flank wear effect. The variation rules of cutting force, residual stress and temperature distributions along with the tool flank wear were analyzed comparing with the sharp tool tip. Through FEM simulation method, affections of the tool flank wear value VB on cutting forces, residual stress and temperature distributions were analyzed. A special result in this simulation is that the thrust force is more sensitive to tool flank wear, which can be used as a recognition method of tool condition monitoring. The FEM simulation analysis result agrees well with the experimental measuring data in public literatures and some experiments made also by the authors....

      • Improved model and 3D simulation of densification process for iron powder

        A new model for describing the compaction process of iron powder was proposed based on the continuum hypothesis and elliptical yield criterion. To simulate the densification behaviour, the constitutive model was implemented in Marc computer program. For the relationship between load and displacement, different models were compared and the influence of the parameters in the constitutive equations was determined by means of simulation and experiments. The density distribution of a balancer was measured and simulated. The results show that the parameter η adopted plays a modification role for the load-displacement curve, and compared with other models the present model fits better with the experimental data in the later stage of the compaction process mainly due to the different parameters A and B. The friction on the contact surface contributes to the inhomogeneous density distribution under large deformation of the workpiece. The comparison between the simulation and experimental data indicates that this model can be used to predict the powder compact process precisely and effectively....

        The numerical simulation on drawing process of automotive B-pillar was carried out on AutoForm software, and dangerous forming areas were discovered. The processing parameters, such as the layout of drawbeads, blank holding force and the shape of blank, were adjusted and optimized according to the simulation results.       • Numerical simulation and experimental investigation of incremental sheet forming process

        In order to investigate the process of incremental sheet forming (ISF) through both experimental and numerical approaches, a three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element model (FEM) was developed to simulate the process and the simulated results were compared with those of experiment. The results of numerical simulations, such as the strain history and distribution, the stress state and distribution, sheet thickness distribution, etc, were discussed in details, and the influences of process parameters on these results were also analyzed. The simulated results of the radial strain and the thickness distribution are in good agreement with experimental results. The simulations reveal that the deformation is localized around the tool and constantly remains close to a plane strain state. With decreasing depth step, increasing tool diameter and wall inclination angle, the axial stress reduces, leading to less thinning and more homogeneous plastic strain and thickness distribution. During ISF, the plastic strain increases stepwise under the action of the tool. Each increase in plastic strain is accompanied by hydrostatic pressure, which explains why obtainable deformation using ISF exceeds the forming limits of conventional sheet forming....

        The market of stainless electric steel kettles is growing significantly,but the main mechanism for polishing kettles via traditional handwork operations limits the growth of electric kettle manufacturing.Based on the successful multi-tool automatic polishing system for electric stainless steel kettles,regression analysis and orthogonal tests were employed to construct a polishing process model,with a purpose to improve the automatic polishing technology for electric stainless steel kettles.The model reveals the relationship between the surface roughness and processing parameters including gringding depth,abrasive tangent speed,workpiece rotating speed and axial feeding speed.Simulation and experimental results are in agreement,which shows that this modeling method is feasible in practice,and it can also be used as a guidance for planning automatic polishing process of electric stainless-steel kettles....
