      • X-ray reflectivity investigation of the foam bilayer film formed by hexaethylene glycol dodecyl ethe

        Structural parameters for the free-standing foam film of hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E6) have been measured by using X-ray reflectometry. The results indicate that a "five-laminae" model corresponds to this inverted bilayer and divides it into five regions. The thicknesses of the aliphatic chainregions, the polar head-group regions, and the central aqueous core are 0.90, 1.35 and 1.31 nm, respectively; and their corresponding electron densities are 2.4 ( 10?3, 2.6 ( 10?3 and 2.3(10?3 electron/nm3, respectively; the interfacial roughness between adjacent regions is 0.34 nm. The central core of this foam film does not contain free water, its thickness decreased 0.40 nm under the irradiation of infrared rays due to the loss of structural water....

        Black water aggregation (BWA) in Taihu Lake is a disaster for the lake environment.It is a phenomenon resulting from water environmental deterioration and eutrophication caused by accumulation of pollutants in the lake,according to research on the water quality,pollutants of BWA,and occurrence mechanisms of BWA.Dead algae are the material base of BWA,the polluted sediment is an important factor for the formation of BWA,and hydrological and meteorological conditions such as sun light,air temperature,wind speed,and water flow are the other factors that may lead to the formation of BWA.Thioether substances such as dimethyl trisulfide are the representative pollutants of BWA.Parameters such as chlorophyll-a,DO,pH,and water temperature are sensitive indicators of BWA.Measures such as algae collection,ecological dredging,pollution control,and water diversion from the Yangtze River to the lake,are effective,and strengthening aeration is an emergency measure to control BWA....

      • A New Grade Carbon Black Produced by Thermal Plasma Process

        This paper presents a new route about producing carbon black, by which the naturalgas cracking is carried out in the absence of oxygen thanks to an electric energy supply externallygiven by a plasma jet. The carbon black produced by this process has a narrow size distributionand a small average diameter of 38 nm as well as a highly branched aggregate. The higher DBPvalue of 1.40 ml/g shows it should be a high structure carbon black. The FTIR spectra shows thatthere are lots of aromatic c-c bonds and a large amount of nitrogen-containing functional groupson the carbon blacks surface, such as -NH, -CN as well as -CH, -OH, -COOH groups....

      • Nanohybrid TiO2/carbon black sensor for NO2 gas

        A nanohybrid sensor of nanosized TiO2-coated carbon black particles, prepared by sol-gel technology for the detection of NO2 gas, has been developed. The response of the electric resistance of the hybrid sensor to NO2 concentration is investigated, showing that the sensitivity of the hybrid sensor is raised as certain ratio of the TiO2 content in the sensor.       • Gas chromatographic method for the determination of hexaconazole residues in black tea

        A highly reliable, quantitative and sensitive analytical method for determining the residues of the fungicide, hexaconazole in black tea is described. The proposed method is based on liquid-liquid extraction followed by gas chromatographic determination, using nitrogen phosphorus detector (GC-NPD) for the identification and quantitation of hexaconazole. The most was cleaned up by adsorption column chromatography using activated florisil. Performance of the method was assessed by evaluating quality parameters such as recovery value, repeatability, reproducibility, linearity and limits of detection and quantitation. When the method was assessed for repeatability, the percentage of recovery ranged between 86% and 96% while the relative standard deviation was between 0.30% and 2.35%. In studies on reproducibility the recovery ranged from 81% to 85% and relative standard deviation from 1.68% to 5.13%, implying that the method was reliable. A field trial was conducted to verify the application of this method with real samples. Results prove that the validated method was suitable for extracting hexaconazole residues....

      • Light Fraction Carbon and Water-Stable Aggregates in Black Soils

        The distribution of light fraction carbon (LF-C) in the various size classes of aggregates and its relationship to waterstable aggregates as well as the influence of cultivation on the organic components in virgin and cultivated black soils were studied by wet sieving and density separation methods. The total organic carbon (TOC) and LF-C were significantly higher (P ≤ 0.05) in the virgin soils than in the cultivated soils. The LF-C in aggregates of different size classes varied from 0.9 to 2.5 g kg-1 in the cultivated soils and from 2.5 to 7.1 g kg-1 in the virgin soils, whereas the ratio of LF-C to TOC varied from 1.9% to 7.3% and from 5.0% to 12.2%, respectively. After being incubated under constant temperature and controlled humidity for three months, the contribution of LF-C to TOC sharply decreased to an amount (1.7%-8.5%)close to the level in soils that had been cultivated for 20 to 25 years (1.3%-8.8%). As a result, the larger water-stable macro-aggregates (especially > 1 mm) decreased sharply, indicating that the LF-C pool in virgin soils declined quickly after cultivation, which reduced the water stability of soil aggregates....

      • To Improve the Dispersibility of Carbon Black in Water with Plasma and Organic Amines Treatments

        Carbon black has been widely used in many industrial areas,but it is poor dispersibility in water. In order to improve its dispersibility in water,carbon black was treated by oxygen plasma. Plasma treatment,as one of the environmental friendly methods,has been used to introduce polar groups,mainly oxygen-containing groups,to the surface of carbon black. The results show the dispersibility of treated carbon black in water is greatly improved,which is expressed with the centrifugal and gravity settlement rates. Analysis of the treated carbon black with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates that oxygen plasma treatment can cause significant increase of polar groups including C-OH,COOH,C=O,and O-C-O on the surface of carbon black thus greatly improves the dispersing stability of carbon black in water. Besides,the dispersibility of plasma treated carbon black can be further improved by the addition of organic amines,especially polyetheramines. The improvement of the dispersing stability of carbon black has also been confirmed by zeta potential measurements....
